What is Kuusi Palaa?

Kuusi Palaa is the name of a cooperatively-owned trans-disciplinary cultural space in Helsinki, Finland that is decentrally administered. Kuusi Palaa will open in early 2018.

The planned structure

Kuusi Palaa seeks to continue the experiment of Temporary Helsinki (September 2016-September 2017), while introducing a decentralised financial structure that will enable anyone who wishes to support Kuusi Palaa to do so in a manner that is simple and flexible.

Instead of taking the traditional form of a cultural association, which operates through a centralised model of production and financing, Kuusi Palaa is an interface for multiple creative agents (individuals, loosely-organised groups, associations, organisations, companies) to share a common physical space, an economy of participation, and a network of interactions.

Kuusi Palaa's costs are kept to the absolute minimum (mostly rental of premises, electricity, etc.), and these costs are covered through the offering of shares in the cooperative, in the form of 50€ units, called stakes. Any individual or group can become a stakeholder and the stakes are pre-allocated in four-month batches (called seasons) to ensure continuity and prevent bureaucratisation. Kuusi Palaa will continue Temporary's participation economy, which awards a digital currency to any individual who participates in its activities; this currency will still be used as the primary negotiator for content production.

Stakeholders for any given season are thus the legal owners of the space, and their power to shape the direction of the space will work synergistically with the particiation economy.

Any individual or organisation is free to finance their activities however they wish; one is free to apply for grants, self-finance, crowd fund, or employ commercial activities. The Kuusi Palaa cooperative itself does not apply for grants, curate content, or indulge in commercial activity. By purchasing one or many stakes in Kuusi Palaa, any person or group can contribute to the continuity of the project via their own funding choices and use Kuusi Palaa's resources accordingly. We believe that this model of financing allows maximum flexibility with a minimum of administrative effort and keeps Kuusi Palaa itself neutral in terms of content (or, at least decouples the curatorial aspect from the economic engine, spreading culutral production efforts more evenly through all who participate).

This site

As Kuusi Palaa is in its formative stages, this website functions as an online collaboration tool for those involved in the planning. This process is an open one - anyone is free to join up and offer one's input, either here in the discussion topics or in person at the meetings.

Even if you were not a part of Temporary – especially if you were not a part of Temporary! – your input is valuable and you are welcome to take part in shaping the direction of Kuusi Palaa.

What will happen at Kuusi Palaa?

Temporary operated on a model of collaborative curation and adminstration, where the activities and events calendar (which focused on participation-based cultural interactions) were proposed and operated by anyone who was interested. A digital currency, called 'Temporaries', was paid to anyone who attended any activity, and this currency could be 'spent' to pledge support to event proposals. Whenever Temporary was not open for an event, it was potentially open 24/7 as a free, general working space, social centre and meeting room. Anyone could become a member and receive an ID card, which could be used to 'check in' to events and even open the door if no one else was there.

Kuusi Palaa aims to continue this basic structure, while remaining a flexible, agile and reactive experiment that is able to shift to the demands and interests of those who use it.

Contact and how to get involved

If you don't already have an account here, join up and share your thoughts and ideas by contributing to the online discussion topics. And come to the meetings, please! Everyone is welcome, and the more new faces the better.

Another way to get involved is to let us know you are interested. When Kuusi Palaa is registered as a legal entity and has a bank account (in the next few weeks), stakes can be purchased online. Until then, you can let us know in advance that you plan to become a stakeholder – it's helpful to have some sense of who is enthusiastic.

For more information on Kuusi Palaa, or Temporary and how it operated, contact admin@ temporary dotfi via email. Also, please visit www.temporary.fi and take a look through the experiments archive and the info pages.

Temporary and the Biathlon system it runs upon have been supported by Koneen Säätiö during 2016 and 2017.
