DESCRIPTION:\nThe renowned artist Stelarc is visiting Helsinki and has agre
ed to spend an informal afternoon with us at Kuusipalaa on the 16th of Apr
il 15h.\n\nStelarc will start with a presentation ART IN THE LAB AND THE
LANDSCAPE: Problematics and Possibilities after which we will have ample t
ime for questions and discussion about the talk and his work and thinking
in general before we had out for dinner together.\n\nStelarc explores alte
rnate anatomical architectures\, interrogating issues of agency\, identity
and the posthuman. He has performed with a Third Hand\, a Stomach Sculptu
re and Exoskeleton\, a 6-legged walking robot.  Fractal Flesh\, Ping Body
and Parasite are internet performances that explore remote and involuntar
y choreography. He is surgically constructing and stem-cell growing an ear
on his arm that will be internet enabled. In 1996 he was made an Honorary
Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University\, Pittsburgh
and in 2002 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Monash University
\, Melbourne. In 2010 was awarded the Ars Electronica Hybrid Arts Prize. I
n 2015 he received the Australia Council’s Emerging and Experimental Art
s Award. In 2016 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Ionian Univ
ersity\, Corfu. Stelarc is currently a Distinguished Research Fellow\, Sch
ool of Design and Art\, Curtin University. His artwork is represented by S
cott Livesey Galleries\, Melbourne.\n\nART IN THE LAB AND THE LANDSCAPE: P
roblematics and Possibilities\n\nBioArt has been a highly mediated art for
m that is displayed through microscopes\, as wall projections and with gla
ss-ware installations. Cells are not directly visible and are contained in
petri dishes or flasks. Often contamination of the living artwork occurs.
The living\, or more correctly termed\, partially living artwork needs to
be sustained in customized incubators and fed with nutrients. Until we ca
 n stem-cell grow or 3D print slimy\, twitching terratoma-like objects that
we can hold and caress\, the aesthetic and visceral impact will remain di
minished\, in the realm of the concept and design rather than the material
ity of the object. Another broader issue is that BioArt is under the umbre
lla of the art-as-research paradigm. The problem here is that it becomes a
n institutionalized authentication of arts practice validated by incorpora
ting scientific lab protocols and practice. But BioArt has diversified and
now also moved out of the lab into the landscape and away from the restri
ctive regulations of operating in institutions. The problematics of BioArt
practice in labs are being bypassed for new possibilities elsewhere.\n\nI
mage Ear on Arm by Nina Sellars\n\nStelarc's visit to Helsinki is supporte
d by the University of the Arts Helsinki (Live Art and Performance Studies
\, MA in Ecology and Contemporary Performance\, the Academy of Fine Arts)\
, Aalto University School of Arts\, Design and Architecture\, Bioart Socie
ty and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:+++INTRODUCTION+++\n\nDuring this two-day workshop\, you will e
xplore the direct relationship between sound and image.\n\nUsing the Pure
Data programming environment\, you can directly control the vertical and h
orizontal movements\, as well as the brightness\, of a beam of light. You
will then explore Lissajous figures\, 3D models\, Rutt-Etra video scan pro

DESCRIPTION:New media technologies are dependent on energy and material res
ources. Especially for mobile and handheld devices\, batteries today const
itute the primary backbone of portable energy storage and supply. Despite
over decades of research\, they remain assemblages of messy chemicals\, ha
zardous\, black-boxed and subject to thermal runaways. This talk excavates
the battery as a key component of media technologies\, that not by itself
can be considered media for dataflows\, but without which media cannot op
erate nor exist. How is the battery’s obsolescence tied to modern media
and its throwaway origins? Why and how hardware design came to conceal it
and how software today merely provides a surface tweak? From mining to man
ufacturing to toxic landfills\, what are the materialities of the battery
’s contemporary life-cycle in the so-called circular economy? By a thoro
ugh excavation\, Samir Bhowmik contends that a historical and technologica
l understanding of portable energy storage is critical to shaping an envir
onmentally-ethical future of new media.\n\nBhowmik will also present the C
ommunity Power Bank (CPB) workshops at Pixelache Helsinki in 2015–16.The
project recycled Lithium 18650 batteries with community participation and
re- purposed them to build power banks for handheld media devices. The wo
rkshops were conducted at the Museum of Photography and at the OSCE (Open
Source Circular Economy) Days in Helsinki\, Finland.\n\nThe lecture will b
e streamed live via Korppiradio (korppiradio.net) together with radio prog
 ramme related to the talk's theme.\n\nKeywords: communication\, battery\,
 energy\, lithium\, obsolescence\, portable computing\, e-waste\, environme
 nt\, mining\n\nArtist Bio: Samir Bhowmik (b. 1975) is an artist\, architec
t and researcher. He is currently engaged in art installations in Helsinki
and Berlin along with post-doctoral research at the Institute for Musicol
ogy and Media Studies\, Humboldt University-Berlin. Samir graduated as a D
octor of Arts in New Media from the Media Lab of Aalto University\, Finlan
 d. His artistic and research practice focuses on media infrastructures\, e
cological media and digital memory. He is supported by the Finnish Cultura
l Foundation since 2017.\n\nThe lecture kickstarts the BioSignals project\
 , a series of site-specific sound art\, narrations and nature-based data s
treams by human and non-human cultural producers during Summer-Autumn 2018
\, culminating with a contribution to the next Pixelache Helsinki Festival
in Spring 2019. The artistic content of the project will focus on creativ
e and actual interpretations of biosemiotics\, energy as media and communi
cation. Biosemiotics is an increasingly influential paradigm of thinking w
hich brings together biology and communication\, signs and signals of life
in its myriad forms. In particular it offers conceptual tools to consider
communications and environmental meaning-making from a non-human perspect
 ive\, including plant and lichens\, animal\, bacterial\, elemental interac
tors\, via tactile\, aural and signal-based biochemical means. The BioSign

DESCRIPTION:How we feel\, what we feel\, even what we think\, is a direct f
unction of our bodily chemistry. Our organism is reducible to cells and th
ese cells\, as well as spaces between them\, are reducible to chemical ele
ments.\nThere are two ways we are creating/affecting our bodily chemistry.
\nOne is by in taking substances from the environment and the other is by
the movement of the bodily matter (intentional or unintentional\, constant
or occasional movements and thoughts).\nSo our health and wellbeing depen
d on what comes in through our mouth\, lungs and skin and on what is happe
ning with our body-mind.\n\nThe Body-Mind hub is imagined to be a place wh
ere you can get your daily intake of healthy food and activities.\nThis pi
lot session is meant to have a taste of the concept\, discuss it and devel
op it.\n\nBreakfast\n\nThere is a number of chemical elements and compound
s that we have to intake in sufficient quantities every day in order to ma
intain the health of our physical body. Most of them can be found in parti
cular plants we use for food and we will eat most of them for breakfast an
d discuss healthy nutrition.\n\nMeditation (*meditation is any activity th
at stimulates awareness)\n\nOur metabolism\, as a result of physical and m
ental activity\, produces some amount of waste\, that is then extracted fr
om our system in various ways. If that waste\, some of which acts as a poi
son for our cells while some clogs our vessels\, stays and accumulates in
 our system\, we feel bad\, tired\, unhappy\, depressed...\nPhysical and me
ntal wastes interact and add to each other\, producing each other and feed
ing on each other\, exacerbating each other.\nWhat can we do intentionally
with our body\, and mind\, which is one of the same\, to stimulate extrac
tion of waste from our system?\nThere are exercises and practices that sti
mulate these processes\, while at the same time filling us with energy and
enhancing active brain capacity. We will try some of them and discuss the
ir potential in bettering our overall wellbeing.\n

DESCRIPTION:As of 25 May 2018\, the new EU privacy law (GDPR) will become e

new ways of vocalising\, improvising\, and group interaction. These gather
ings would be based on the works of avant-garde composer and musician Paul
ine Oliveros\, who pushed the boundaries of awareness\, listening\, and mu
sic-making.\n\nParticipants will gather with a pre-determined exercise or
exercises in mind\, chosen either directly from Oliveros' Sonic Meditation
s (which I can send ahead of time as PDF)\, or can propose ideas that are
 similar in nature.\n

DESCRIPTION:+++INTRODUCTION+++\n\nDuring this two-day workshop\, you will e
xplore the direct relationship between sound and image.\n\nUsing the Pure
Data programming environment\, you can directly control the vertical and h
orizontal movements\, as well as the brightness\, of a beam of light. You
will then explore Lissajous figures\, 3D models\, Rutt-Etra video scan pro
cessing\, and other audio-driven visual shapes and forms which can be disp
layed and manipulated in real time on an XY oscilloscope\, or with oscillo
scope emulating software directly on your laptop.\n\nVECTOR SYNTHESIS is a
n audiovisual\, computational art project using sound synthesis and vector
graphics display techniques to investigate the direct relationship betwee
n sound+image. It draws on the historical work of artists such as Mary Ell
 en Bute\, John Whitney\, Nam June Paik\, Ben Laposky\, and Steina &amp\; W
oody Vasulka among many others\, as well as on ideas of media archaeology
and the creative re-use of obsolete technologies.\n\n+++PARTICIPATION+++\n

DESCRIPTION:An evening of out sounds from the UK\, Helsinki and elsewhere.\
n\nStarring Jon Collin (UK/Stockholm):\nJon Collin is a guitar player from
Lancashire\, UK\, currently based in Sweden. On record he plays either im
provised freeform abstract blues or through-composed minimalistic utilitar
ian drone music. His live shows are improvisations using a system of body\
, mind\, breath\, strings and electricity. His most recent LP is The Natur
 e (Early Music\; 2017).\n\n"Acoustic string improvs of great abstraction\,
clangor and depth\, recalling a certain vibe that Loren Connors once call
ed his own\, although there's no aping here. Lots of dizzy inventions of c
lustered strings that manage to maintain a certain melodic beauty for all
their weirdness. There are even bits of wobbled slide and sustain that rec
all Fahey at his loosest. Totally boss." – Byron Coley\n\nwith:\n\nPehme
ät Mummot (Helsinki)\nThe music of Mummot derives from Bach's preludes\,
taking recognisable melodies as its starting point. These are played\, loo
ped\, and varied with a touch of improvisation on a keyboard and then work
ed through\, transformed\, and twisted by synthesisers. The result is a mi
xture of throwback sounds of early futuristic ambient and electronic pop\,
with its roots in classical music.\n\n&amp\;\n\nBoom Edan (Helsinki)\nMan
y sounds being played at the same time by one man\, words too.\n\n+ presen
tation of the Winogradsky Columns workshop happening earlier in the day\n

DESCRIPTION:This will be our first event of 2018 and will form part one of
a three part series. The second will take place in September and the third
in January. This series of events is for all groups who are trying to wor
k without (or with minimized) hierarchical structures: artistic collective
 s\, co-ops\, startups\, NGOs\, companies\, activist networks\, etc. Pixela
che has for many years attempted to adapt such a decentralised mode. We ca
me up with some of our own solutions that worked\, but still struggle with
some basic issues.\n\nWe have realized that we are not alone with these s
truggles\, and that those challenges are rather common to any group trying
to work without a traditional command-and-control structure. How can we b
e inclusive without spending all the time in meetings? How to deal with po
wer imbalances? How to undo our programming and develop an open\, collabor
ative culture?\n\nWe will approach this through practical workshops\, demo
nstrations of tools we have found\, and analytical challenges.\n\nIn this
event we intend to make toothpaste\, continuing our work making face cream
at last year's Pixelache festival. We will demonstrate the power of NextC
loud as a method of avoiding reliance on Google for shared working. We wil
l play decision-making games.\n\nWe encourage everyone to bring things to
eat and drink\; preferably (but not necessarily) things you have made your
 selves.\n

DESCRIPTION:UPDATE! Because the inner courtyard will be closed for construc

 si Palaa\nhttps://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=18/60.18008/24.94105&amp\;lay
ers=N\nWe will be somewhere between the statue and Cafe Piritta. I will pu
t a sign on the gate to inform latecomers. Bring a picnic blanket if you h
ave one!\n\nFree food and drink!\n\nThe future of the Kuusi Palaa project
will be open for debate and dialogue at this event. It is my belief that\,
in response to the development of technologically mediated social relatio
ns\, the Kuusi Palaa project has sought to address the value of face to fa
ce interactions that generate a different kind of social relation. Through
the creation of events\, encounters can result in interpersonal relations
. This platform is another sort of technological mediation that aims to br
ing individuals together in such encounters in a way that encourages novel
ty and intimacy over repetition and a narcissistic conservatism. However\,
the value of interpersonal relations can be extended beyond the face to f
ace encounter. This valuation is a process rather than an established syst
em\, and as such it requires participation to continue its existence. Ther
e is no value in this system without participation\, without the productio
n and sustainment of human relations. This event will continue the discuss
ion of this process of valuation\, questioning how it might be broadened t
hrough new expressions.\n\nBudgetary proposals for season 2 will be apprai
sed and fundraising for season 2 stakes will also be discussed.\n

DESCRIPTION:I'm Too Busy is a board game where players travel around Helsin
ki living their lives while trying to collaboratively open new cultural in
 itiatives. You will have a job\, go to work\, attend art/culture events\,
and pool your resources to create new culture spaces. Along the way you mi
ght fall in love\, get (or not get) public funding\, become burned out\, e
at pizza\, get caught by HSL ticket inspectors\, meditate in the forest\,
go to karaoke bars\, and/or run out of money. I'm Too Busy is a game that
encourages mild role-playing behaviour. All ages are welcome\, though pare
nts should be advised that the game does contain some problematic content
such as alcohol use\, sexual promiscuity\, and arts association board meet
ings.\n\nThe game was designed by the Biathlon development team as a playf
ul way to stimulate discussion and interaction about city life\, cultural
ventures\, organising\, and possibilities. Thus\, each session of the game
is more like a workshop\, or perhaps a therapy session. The game is still
in development and has been tested in two iterations so far\; this will n
ot necessarily be the 'final' version.\n\nAt Kuusi Palaa (which is a space
on the board!)\, we'd like to run a session of the game for 6-10 players.
If the event proves popular\, we are happy to run future events as the ga
me itself changes. The game should take roughly 60-90 minutes\, or possibl
y longer depending on how many people play.\n

DESCRIPTION:The art form of sound poetry brings together different forms of
  expression - written\, sonic\, visual\, physique - without placing restri
ctions on meaning or structure. Therefore\, a sound poetry event can also
bring together artists - both professional and amateur - from different fi
elds\, to form collaboration and learn from each other. Previous sound poe
